A word to the Episcopal Church
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ: It has been a little more than six years since my investiture as Presiding Bishop. Over these last days I have been asked frequently – both in gatherings of bishops, clergy and lay people, and by reporters – about my view of the “state of the church.” As I mark the passage of this time, I have thought about our life as a community of faith in this season, and wanted to write now to share my reflections with you who are the Episcopal Church.

Following the star:
God often works in our own lives by unsettling us and fascinating us. By various routes and by different “stars” God insinuates God’s own self into our consciousness and we are drawn beyond ourselves into a journey of growth and discovery that transcends the boundaries of the known and familiar, safe and predictable, and involves risk and unknowing.

Sermon by the Presiding Bishop at Washington National Cathedral
The very fact that we are all different, that we are not all eyes, or hands, makes possible patterns of relationship and interaction that could not exist if we were all the same. The sacrament of baptism helps us to see that our differences, when they are brought together in Christ, are an amazing gift which will allow us to do amazing things in Christ’s name.

Biography of the Presiding Bishop
Frank Griswold was elected to a nine-year term as Presiding Bishop at the 1997 General Convention and invested in January 1998. He serves as Primate and chief pastor of the Episcopal Church, president of the House of Bishops, president and chief executive officer of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, and president or chair of numerous Episcopal Church boards and agencies.
