The Advocacy Center is looking for an Associate Program Officer: Economic and Environmental Affairs
This position addresses the Church’s response to environmental and economic justice based on Church policy as adopted by General Convention and Executive Council. It is part of the Advocacy Center and within the Center is part of a focus area encompassing domestic justice. The incumbent reports to the Center Director but also takes direction from the Domestic Justice and Jubilee Officer who coordinates the focus area.
The successful applicant will have a breadth of knowledge of environmental and economic justice issues and understand the interrelated dynamics between building sustainable environments and sustainable economies, as well as the impact on poor and marginalized communities.
This position is based in Seattle, WA and travel is estimated at 25%-50%. Estimated start date is Fall, 2008
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist provinces and dioceses in service to congregations and Church institutions to implement policies and procedures that promote environmental and economic stewardship through development and/or identification of appropriate resources
- Work with networks and organizations across the 9 provinces of TEC as liaison to environmental and economic justice
- Work with committees and commissions of Executive Council and General Convention as appropriate and coordinate implementation of policies adopted by those bodies
- Serve as representative of the Episcopal Church to the Anglican Environmental Network and coordinate environmental and economic work with other organizations, ecumenical and interfaith bodies
- Oversee the work of establishing the carbon footprint of the national Church – including Church Center, Regional Offices, Executive Council, Committees, Commissions and agencies and all other national infrastructure – and develop a plan for carbon reduction in line with Executive Council mandate, and coordinate implementation of this plan
- Coordinate economic justice work, including staffing the Social Responsibility in Investments committee (especially its work on corporate environmental accountability) and Economic Justice Loan committee, utilizing consultants as needed
- Coordinate with the Office of Government Relations which takes the lead and provides direction on environmental advocacy to the U.S. government and link with United Nations work of the Anglican Observer’s office and the office of International Peacemaking (Advocacy Center) as environmental issues overlap with other work in the Advocacy Center and other Centers and departments

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in economics and/or environmental studies and/or have relevant experience in the field, including experience on the impact of economic and environmental issues on marginalized communities.
