How does one become a priest in the Episcopal Church?

«Return

Per Bud Holland, Coordinator of the Office for Ministry Development:

"The discernment process to become a priest begins in a local congregation where (a candidate) would meet with the priest and a discernment committee.  If (this person) would wish to continue in the process and have the support and encouragement from the congregation and priest to do so, (he/she) would then meet with the Bishop and the Commission on Ministry in the Diocese.  They would also have conversation with (the candidate) and help work with (him/her) in that discernment.  In the Episcopal Church discernment is both an internal discernment (within oneself) and a communal discernment with others (congregation, priest, Commission on Ministry, Bishop, and later in the process with the Standing Committee of the Diocese).  The education and formation process, once (a candidate is) named as a postulant for Holy Orders, varies depending on the diocese and Bishop but would normally involve several years preparation in a seminary or diocesan school.”
