How are hymns chosen?

- According to The Rev. Dr. Clay Morris, Program Officer for Liturgical & Spiritual Resources, Evangelism & Congregational Life Center:

Hymns are chosen to fit within seasons, first of all. The hymnal is arranged by season, so that is pretty straight-forward. Beyond that, it is important to relate the hymnody to the scripture appointed for the day.  The Eucharistic Lectionary is a three year (A,B,C) cycle. Look at page 888 in the Book of Common Prayer to discover which year we are in.

Some recommended resources include:  Hymnal Studies Five; a Liturgical Index to the Hymnal 1982. In addition, they have Hymnal Studies Eight; A scriptural Index to the Hymnal, 1982.  If you wish to purchase either of these publications, contact Episcopal Books and Resources (EBaR) at 800-903-5544 or explore their website at http://www.episcopalbookstore.org/
