Diocesan standing committees would be back in the business of recommending candidates for ordination under the latest revision of Title III, Canon 8, worked out on Monday morning.
Originally, the Standing Commission on Ministry Development (SCMD) had proposed reducing the role of standing committees to one of simply certifying that a candidate had met all the canonical requirements for ordination. The SCMD approved wording that standing committees will certify that there are “no sufficient objections” to the candidate’s medical, psychological, moral, doctrinal or spiritual lives.
Witnesses told the commission that the standing committees’ approval role often supplied another collective set of eyes and experiences to the evaluation of a specific person’s fitness for ordination.
The SCMD will meet again this morning at 7:30.
