Creative Practice in Prayer & Worship
Monday, July 21, 2008 - Friday, July 25, 2008
1:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Location: Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley CA
Creative Practice in Prayer and Worship is a course for visual artists. In today's diverse and complicated world, faith and worship find power to communicate through the shared vernacular of the visual.

The arts are tools of faith. The practices of the arts foster a more personal relationship with the Divine and with others. Over the week, participants will engage in the discipline of the creative process while exploring selected scriptural themes applied in daily life, faith and doubt.

Participants will work in a collaborative studio arts environment and can take advantage of individual tutorials available outside the scheduled class time. Studio space and ample time for personal work will be provided. In addition, participants are encouraged to bring samples of their work in slide or electronic form for presentation and discussion.

The course will run 5 half-days, in the afternoons, July 21-25, 1:30-5:00. The format each day will be fairly consistent. Participants will read and consider scripture from different points of view that include current events, poetry, literature, and art history. The class will then discuss visual interpretations of the scripture passage. Students will have the opportunity to express these scriptural interpretations through a variety of exploratory modes. Some creative practice will be group collaborative, while some creative practice will be left to the individual student’s choice.
