The year 2008 is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the international slave trade. Yet the effects of that heinous institution are still with us today.
The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church will preside at a Service of Repentance that will take place at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Washington National Cathedral, Workshops and a Reception on October 3, from 1:00 – 6:00 PM
General Convention 2006 Resolution A123 offered the Church’s apology for its own involvement in and benefits from Slavery. It also called for a Service of Repentance to be held at the Washington National Cathedral as well as in Cathedrals in all dioceses.
Workshops will focus on:
V Narratives of The Episcopal Church and slavery and Jim Crow segregation
V The use of Scripture to support slavery
V The continuing reality of institutional racism in the Church and society
V Examples of Initiatives for the “repairing of the breach” (Is 58:12)
