Episcopal Appalachian Ministries was founded 35 years ago as Appalachia South, the Episcopal Church's response to the War on Poverty by six southern bishops. Its ministry is still to work with the people of Appalachia in the name of the Risen Christ to proclaim the Gospel in ways which will renew and empower and serve justice. EAM (formerly APSO) seeks to inspire, nurture, and affirm those who serve the unique needs of the people of Appalachia through advocacy, consciousness-raising, networking, education and other appropriate program, and working through diocesan channels. This includes supporting dioceses in local projects; conducting work camps; organizing conferences; interfacing with the Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA); serving as a communications link; publishing materials; providing assistance on such issues as small church ministry development and Appalachian culture; and advocating public policies that respect the dignity of all persons.
