Everyday Advocacy - Reflections

As Grassroots Coordinator for the Office of Government Relations and Episcopal Public Policy Network, a big part of my job is traveling the country spreading the word about the ministry of public policy advocacy and the EPPN. I often am asked questions about what it is like working for the Church on Capitol Hill, how we do what we do, and in general what is it like to do advocacy.

With those questions in mind, we are starting a new feature on the EPPN website called “Everyday Advocacy.” Periodically, reflections will be posted that share the day to day experiences of “striving for justice and peace,” from our staff, clergy and advocates like you from across the country.

We look forward your thoughts, comments, and stories of everyday advocacy.

Faithfully,
Mary Getz
Grassroots Coordinator

We want to hear from you!

Reconnect With and Celebrate the Sacredness of Earth
8/28/06 -- Catherine Grace, CHS, Community of the Holy Spirit

We are a small Episcopal religious order with two houses, one in New York City and one in Brewster, NY. At Brewster we have established what we call Bluestone Farm—our beginning effort to reconnect with and celebrate the sacredness of Earth, to live in harmony with the land, to move more deeply into sustainable living, and to educate for the future, focusing on Earth literacy.

They had a glimpse of God’s love, and so did we . . .
8/25/06 – Val Hymes, EPPN Member and Diocese of Maryland Prison Ministry Task Force Coordinator

A child with a parent in prison has a 70 percent chance of going to prison too. Children with two parents in prison have odds of more than 90 percent against them.  What can we do to stop that destructive cycle?

Dioceses around the country are sending some of those children to camp for one week of healing, love, learning and fun.  Does it make a difference?

Just Trying to Make Ends Meet
8/21/06 – John Johnson, the Domestic Policy Analyst for the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations, on sabbatical. New Orleans, LA.

“I’ve never asked for help before,” said the woman who had come to Trinity Church  seeking assistance with her power bill after referral by a counselor.  She needed to pay something, anything, to keep the lights from being cut off.  She is a working class woman in a city that still is hemorrhaging at the seams. For many, daily existence here is a down-right bizarre mix of trying to live normally while knowing nothing is normal except for the dysfunction.

Putting Their Money Where Their Mouth Is
8/16/06 -- Mary Getz

...Jubilee Ministry – living out their mission statement to serve through "the talk of our faith and the walk of our faith”  – just took another huge step for the Church in its ongoing efforts to help workers attain a living wage...

Everybody Now -- Never too Early to Think About Voting
7/27/06 -- Mary Getz

Several weeks ago we sent out an alert to the EPPN with the same title. I just can't say it enough times. In fact, here in the office folks laugh because I am constantly reminding people that there are elections going on all the time all over the country . . .

You never know when you'll learn something new . . .
7/25/06 -- Mary Getz, Grassroots Coordinator

Last night as I was channel surfing, an ad on VH-1 caught my attention. It was an ad for the Global Fund -- part of a new partnership between VH-1 and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and its ravaging affect worldwide.

My first thought was "Wow! How cool is that!" . . .

For better or for worse, I will never forget it
6/5/06 - This reflection comes from John Johnson, the Domestic Policy Analyst for the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations, on the conclusion of his recent tour of New Orleans, LA.

New Orleans has been my home away from home for only four and a half days and this is what I have seen with my own eyes and my perspective of the shared personal experiences of a few of the millions of people who were affected by last year’s Hurricane Katrina.  Nine months after the hurricane, there still is tremendous damage here—physical, structural, emotional and political; the damage is immense and it is spread far and wide.

Finding the Small Victories Even in the Larger Loss
2/1/06 – This reflection comes from John Johnson, the Domestic Policy Analyst for the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations, written to friends and colleagues on the end of a long advocacy campaign.

In reflecting on the events of the day as I walked back to the office from the Capitol reception, I for the first time in a long while had a great sense of peace.  In the midst of the loss, there was much, for me, to be grateful.  While no doubt the cuts to those that live in the margins of our world are painful and wrong—and we should never forget that—I am mindful of how I was personally and professionally enriched by the opportunity to work with a community ...
