Shrine

A holy place that commemorates a person or event of religious significance. Shrines may include a reliquary, statue, or other sacred image. There are many shrines of the Blessed Virgin Mary, such as Lourdes in France and Walsingham in England. Shrines are often places of pilgrimage. The shrine of St. Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral was a popular place of pilgrimage until it was destroyed under Henry VIII. Visitation of shrines is part of the devotional piety of some members of the Episcopal Church, especially Anglo-catholics. See Pilgrimage.
